How is Popcorn Grown

Growing Popcorn

The kernels are dried in a separate vessel to ensure that the moisture level is optimal for popping. To burst, the kernel must retain approximately 14% moisture. This kind of maize soon transforms into its typical shape since the moisture level is low.

Kernel Popping

Once completely dried, the kernels are ready to pop. They require temperatures ranging from 400 to 600° F to pop. There are several methods available, such as microwaving and air popping. When heated, the kernel’s moisture converts to steam, causing the starch to pop. Due to the intense pressure, the kernel explodes from the inside out.
